Mountain Biking in Dupont & Pisgah: Choose Your Adventure

We’re incredibly fortunate to be located between two of the best mountain biking destinations in the Southeast: Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Forest. With Pisgah’s entrance just 4 miles from our RV park and DuPont only 6.5 miles away, you could be riding world-class trails within minutes of settling into your RV spot!

So, the easy part is done — you’ve picked the perfect basecamp for your mountain biking adventure. Now comes the hard part: DuPont or Pisgah?

DuPont vs. Pisgah: What Kind of Rider Are You?

The trails in DuPont and Pisgah are beautifully different, which is part of what makes this area mecca for mountain bikers. Choosing the right ride for your style and skill level is key to making the most of your time here.

Ask yourself:

  • Are you a beginner, intermediate, or experienced rider?
  • Do you love smooth, flowy trails or prefer earning your descents with a long technical climb?
  • Do you want a quick spin before lunch, or an all-day epic adventure?
  • And perhaps most importantly… do your legs want to walk tomorrow? (Just kidding… mostly 😄)

Let’s break down what you can expect from each forest.

DuPont State Recreational Forest

Best for: Beginner to advanced riders, flow lovers, shorter or mostly moderate rides

DuPont spans over 12,500 acres and offers 80+ miles of scenic, well-maintained trails for mountain bikers, hikers, and horseback riders. This forest is known for its flowy singletrack, moderate climbs, and fast, fun descents. It’s the perfect place for adventure ride with a tapestry of trails, terrain and ups & down. This is what makes Dupont great…you can make it a more relaxed, shorter ride or splice together a variety of trails to make a long ride with noteworthy elevation gains & rocky adventures.

DuPont also features rock gardens, slickrock sections, and even trails that pass by picturesque waterfalls. You can even ride out to an abandoned airstrip with sweeping mountain views — ideal for your next Strava or Instagram post.

Because much of the trail system winds through shaded canopies of mountain laurel and hardwoods, summer rides stay cooler and more comfortable.

Favorite Trails in DuPont:

  • Ridgeline – A local favorite for smooth, fast descents
  • Rocky Ridge – Technical in spots but still beginner-friendly
  • Hickory Mountain Loop – A nice mix of climbs, views, and downhill fun
  • Airstrip Trail – Fast, flowy, and scenic

Pisgah National Forest

Best for: Intermediate to advanced riders, technical trail seekers, big adventure lovers

Pisgah is massive — over 500,000 acres of rugged wilderness, packed with some of the most challenging and rewarding trails in the region. Pisgah is where you go to earn your downhill.

It’s not uncommon to grind out a 6-mile gravel climb before dropping into a rooty, rocky singletrack descent. The terrain is more technical, the trails are longer, and the rewards? Huge. Expect high-elevation views, creek crossings, natural features, and a true backcountry feel.

This is the forest for riders who want to test their skills and stamina — and be rewarded with epic downhills and unforgettable scenery.

Favorite Trails in Pisgah:

  • Avery Creek – Fast, raw, and rowdy. Expect steep sections, technical roots, and creek crossings that keep you on your toes.
  • Butter Gap – A local favorite with punchy climbs, technical rock gardens, and rewarding flowy sections through dense forest.
  • Daniel Ridge – A great intermediate loop with a mix of gravel road and rugged singletrack, plus a beautiful waterfall along the way.
