Two-Wheel Adventures in Western North Carolina
From Scenic Road Rides to Singletrack & Everything In Between

There’s a reason two-wheel enthusiasts of all kinds are drawn to this corner of the mountains—road cyclists, mountain bikers, gravel riders, casual cruisers, and even motorcycle adventurers alike. The variety here is hard to match, and for us, it’s what first brought us to the area long before we ever imagined becoming the proud owners of Pisgah Forest RV Park & Campground.
Todd and I initially discovered this region during our triathlon racing days. We came for the bike training—seeking elevation, climbs, and challenging routes—but quickly realized we had found something much more.
Today, that same sense of adventure extends far beyond the bike. From quiet forest roads to flowing singletrack—and even scenic motor rides—there are endless ways to explore on two wheels.
Road Riding: Where Training Meets Scenery
The road cycling here is nothing short of incredible. Challenging climbs, courteous and minimal traffic, and long stretches of quiet mountain roads make it an ideal place to train—or simply soak in the scenery.
Some of our favorite routes quickly became traditions:
- Riding along the watershed, where the road gently winds beside a flowing mountain stream for miles
- Climbing Skyuka Mountain Road, where the effort is rewarded with sweeping views at the top
- And of course, descending the historic Saluda Grade—fast, winding, and unforgettable
We also had the chance to ride in the Hincapie Gran Fondo a few times, which begins and ends at Hotel Domestique. Between the camaraderie, the challenge, and yes—the incredible post-ride food—it’s an experience we’d recommend to any road cyclist.
Or consider the well-known Assault on the Carolinas, a 50/100K ride starting and ending in downtown Brevard. We haven’t ridden it yet—but it’s definitely on our list, and you may see us out there one year soon.
But our two-wheel adventures didn’t stop there…
Mountain Biking: Where We Got Hooked
While the road riding brought us here, it was the dirt trails that made us fall in love.
The first time we explored the singletrack in DuPont State Recreational Forest, we were hooked. There’s something special about riding through the forest—flowing trails, creek crossings, and stretches of rhododendron canopy that make you feel completely immersed in nature.
What makes mountain biking here even more special is the variety. While DuPont offers a great mix of terrain—from smooth, fast flow to punchy climbs—Pisgah National Forest delivers hundreds of miles of more technical, rugged trails for riders looking for a challenge.
A few of our personal favorites:
- Ridgeline – fast, flowy, and just plain fun (DuPont)
- Airstrip – a great mix of terrain and scenery (DuPont)
- Black Mountain Trail – a classic Pisgah ride with a bit of everything (Pisgah)
- Avery Creek Trail – a fast downhill with rocks, drops, and gaps (Pisgah)
Whether you’re new to mountain biking or an experienced rider, there truly is a trail here for you.
And if you’re looking for a challenge, our area hosts some incredible races like the Pisgah Stage Race and the Swank 65—both known for testing even the most seasoned riders. Todd has ridden the Swank 65 twice and always has a blast… maybe one day I’ll give the “Couch Potato” distance a try.
Bike Parks: For Progression & Play
But the fun doesn’t stop there.
Todd still enjoys catching a little air whenever he can—he grew up riding BMX and pulling off tricks, and that playful side hasn’t gone anywhere. Luckily, we have two incredible bike parks right in our backyard, both designed by professional downhill rider Neko Mulally:
- Kanuga Bike Park – downhill trails for all skill levels, from beginner-friendly flow to advanced lines (and yes, you earn your downhill fun by pedaling up—e-bikes welcome)
- Ride Rock Creek – a favorite for gravity riders, with a shuttle to the top and plenty of technical features
These parks add an entirely different dimension to riding here—and are a blast whether you’re building skills or just out to have fun.
Gravel Riding: Miles of Quiet Exploration
Gravel cycling has exploded in popularity—and for good reason. It combines the best of road and mountain biking, and this area delivers in a big way.
Pisgah National Forest is home to miles of gravel roads that wind through dense forest, climb into higher elevations, and reward riders with solitude and incredible views.
It’s the kind of riding where you can truly unplug, explore, and create your own adventure.
I do have a gravel bike ready to go—I just haven’t had the chance to fully explore these routes yet… but it’s high on my list, and something I’m looking forward to experiencing more of soon.
For those who enjoy a little competition, events like the Dirt Diggler Gravel Grinder offer a fun and challenging way to experience these routes alongside fellow riders.
A Ride for Everyone: The Ecusta Trail
Not every ride has to be a big effort—and that’s part of what makes this area so special. Sometimes, a casual ride into town for shopping or lunch is exactly the kind of adventure you’re looking for.
The Ecusta Trail is a paved greenway offering a relaxed, scenic ride that’s perfect for all ages and abilities. Todd and I rode into Hendersonville one afternoon, enjoying the easy pace and stopping for lunch at a local café along the way—and we both agreed, the food was just as enjoyable as the ride.
We’re especially excited about what’s ahead—the Ecusta Trail is being expanded to connect downtown Hendersonville to downtown Brevard, and will pass right by our park, providing direct access for our guests.
Motorcycles: Scenic Rides Beyond the Pedals
If your idea of a perfect ride includes a throttle instead of pedals, you’re in the right place.
Just a few miles from our park, you can enter Pisgah National Forest and wind your way up through the mountains to connect with the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway. Known for its sweeping curves, scenic overlooks, and long-range mountain views, the Parkway is a favorite among motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country.
Todd doesn’t currently have a motorcycle—but if and when he does again, I have a feeling his first ride will be up to the Parkway.
It’s the kind of ride where the journey truly is the destination—best enjoyed at a relaxed pace, taking in the views along the way.
