Sip, Savor & Slow Down: Discovering Local Wineries in Western North Carolina

Western North Carolina is well known for a few things—scenic trails, waterfalls, craft breweries, u-pick orchards, and of course, our colorful fall season. It’s a place where fresh air adventures, local flavor, and the beauty of nature blend together naturally.

But there’s another experience quietly taking root in the region… and it’s one worth discovering.

Welcome to the winery side of the mountains.

Tucked into the rolling landscape of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this area offers more than just beautiful views—it also provides an ideal environment for growing grapes. The same conditions that make this region so special for apple orchards and outdoor adventure also lend themselves perfectly to winemaking.

Hillside plantings promote natural airflow, which helps reduce frost risk and disease pressure, while the slopes provide excellent drainage—especially important in an area that sees regular rainfall. Ample sun exposure throughout the day supports optimal ripening, and the rocky, sandy soils encourage the vines to struggle just enough to produce more concentrated, flavorful grapes.  The landscape itself is what makes this region so well-suited for winemaking.

From Orchards & Ales to Vines & Views

If you’ve visited the area before, you’ve likely experienced its orchards or explored the local brewery scene. Wineries feel like a natural extension of both.

The agricultural roots that support apple growing also support vineyards, while the same spirit of craftsmanship found in local breweries carries over into winemaking. The result is a well-rounded tasting experience that reflects the land, the climate, and the people behind it.

After a full day of hiking, biking, or exploring, there’s something especially enjoyable about trading trail shoes for a patio seat—glass in hand, with mountain views all around.
